Written Statement:
For my biology project, I choose to focus on the illiteracy crisis in the world. When I first started my research, I thought that most of the illiterate people in the world were in third world countries. After a lot of research, I have proven myself wrong there are many illiterate people in the world including America. Literacy is a privilege that everyone should have no matter who they are. The main problem behind illiteracy is that is leads to other major global issues like over population, poverty, crime, disease, and learning disabilities. Illiteracy is also a problem because in some part of the world more than 50% of a community is illiterate. We should be concerned about the illiteracy crisis because many children now are illiterate which will lead to many m ore adults being illiterate in the future. If people are illiterate than they will not be able to work. This problem need to be changed, we need to educate our youth. We need to keep our kids engaged in school, and make sure they are happy. By doing this less children will be illiterate, which would lead to less adults being illiterate. Illiteracy can easily be fixed, we can open more clinic to help adults and children read, and we can get people to donate books supplies and money (which I did).These simple things will help save the lives of so many people, buy giving them the gift of literacy a lot in the world could happen. There are around one billion illiterate adults (persons 15 years old and above) in the world today and that is ashamed, With the public school systems, each child should be able to at least graduate from High School. So if there are other reason why kids are not getting educated, then something needs to change. The law of every child needing to go to school needs to be enforced. It is about time. The Science Behind Illiteracy
There really is no science behind illiteracy, but there have been many case studies about illiteracy, and what causes illiteracy. There also have been case studies about what illiteracy causes. Illiteracy causes overpopulation, poverty, crime, and learning disabilities. Illiteracy can cause overpopulation because most uneducated people do not understand over population, and the effects of it so they just have kids because that is about all they can do. Illiteracy causes poverty because if you are illiterate you will not be able to find a decent job. Any jobs you get if you are lucky will pay badly, and if you do not have a job you will not be paid at all which leads to crime. People will start to steal things and hurting people because of their insecurity and anger. Illiteracy also leads to learning disabilities, because if you have not been reading or writing since you were 2 and you are twenty now your brain is not as “open” to learn (scientifically) like it would have been if you 2.

Local Solution
For my local solution I made a flyer asking for book, money, and school supply donations. I put these up in my dorm and at my parents jobs. I also sent out an all-school email, and with the help of Mr. Harris, a all faculty email as well. So far I have gotten three boxes of books, and more are still coming. If I do get money I was going to donate it to Efran Penaflorida, who gets kids out of gangs and off drugs in Vietnam by education. This video is a CNN clip about a 52 year old, adult male from U.S who is illiterate, but he learns to read from his children and his literacy coach. This is a very “happy” story because this man tries to learn how to read, he says in the video that when his kids started to learn how to read it encouraged him to start learning with them. Watching this video really made me appreciative of my education, this ties into my topic because I found it shocking that a grown man (in the states) couldn’t read. Watching other videos I found out that America is the dumbest country, which was also very shocking, but I can see it more now after watching other videos, which was comparing us to Asia.

This video is a clip from a Guyanese comedy skit called Agya Koo, this is very funny, because you know, it is not true, but if it were to be really it would be very sad. The man in this video is illiterate; he cannot speak, and communicate with the girl. The girl gets frustrated because she cannot understand him. By the end of the skit, the girl is practically yelling at him to write what he is trying to say down, but the man is still talking to her. At the end of the skit the man “say” that he will hire someone to write what he is saying down. I thought that this part was sad because he looked so confused and frustrated the whole time, which is often what happens to people who are illiterate, now they are so fed up they do not even want to learn.

“It’s either education or Elimination” this is a clip from the movie Fox and The Hound. It is where the owl warns the fox not to be friends with the hound because he is a hunting dog. The Owl is telling the Fox that he needs to be educated or else he will die, even though in this case the “education” is about hunting, this relates to my project, because many children and adults who are illiterate die, because of the other problems that illiteracy lead to like poverty, and hunger, and poorness.

This is a very moving video. The teacher is one of the greatest in his area. He gets kids engaged, and really is ashamed of his past. In his past years, he let children pass his class who did not deserve it at all, so now he is giving back to his community by teaching a group of adults to read. The two families that they showed in this film really need his help, one woman did not tell her children that she could not read, and could not even go grocery shopping when her child made a list for her. She came back very frustrated. The families that this man is helping are very grateful for him, but some of them get frustrated along the way. This ties into my topic, because it shows that illiteracy not only effects one person, but it effects many and it also show that it isn’t always the persons fault that they cannot read, it could be because their teachers are just passing them instead of taking the time to teach them.

Thesis Statement
· Thesis Statement: Even though children can work and bring a profit home for their families, lack of education is a major global problem. Poverty and lack of education forces one in 12 of the world's children into the worst forms of child labor and nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.
